Father of Injured Polk Paramedic Shares Heartfelt Reaction to Ambulance Crash

POLK COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that both a first responder and the patient he was assisting remained critically injured on Wednesday night after a collision between an ambulance and a pickup truck.

John Parris, aged 32, is currently unconscious after undergoing several emergency surgeries. He is suffering from multiple fractures and a severe brain injury.

Despite his grave condition, there is some positive news. “He’s making slow progress. He’s not out of the woods yet, but each small improvement is a victory. It’s just… he shouldn’t have to be there at all,” remarked Dave Parris, John’s father.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Monday when the ambulance, with lights and sirens activated, was struck at the intersection of U.S. 27 and Lucerne Park Road in Haines City. At the time of the crash, John Parris was attending to an 85-year-old patient en route to a nearby hospital, according to the sheriff’s office.

“You look at the destruction and there’s nothing left of the truck. There’s nothing left of this ambulance. I hope he doesn’t get a slap on the wrist,” said Dave Parris.

Both drivers (the truck and ambulance) are expected to be OK. The sheriff’s office has not provided an update on John Parris’ patient.

“I’m not looking for blood. I’m not looking for revenge. I’m looking for justice. This just shouldn’t be OK,” said Dave Parris.
