In a groundbreaking initiative, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) anticipates that by the close of 2026, air travel along the I-4 corridor stretching from Tampa to Orlando will become a reality. This ambitious project is currently in the research and development phase at SunTrax in Auburndale, which serves as the central hub for this cutting-edge technology.

Jessica Ottaviano, FDOT’s Chief of Staff, emphasized, “We are in the era of flying cars. It’s more like an air Uber or an air taxi.” This innovative program is designed with the primary goal of significantly alleviating traffic congestion on major highways. Initial efforts will concentrate on a pilot program dedicated to a single route, while future expansions aim to establish connectivity among major urban centers such as Miami and Jacksonville, as well as smaller cities like Tallahassee and Fort Myers.
