CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Recent research from the University of Illinois’ Gies College of Business reveals a concerning trend: over half of American workers feel aimless or lack a sense of purpose in their jobs.
Oscar Ybarra, who led the study, emphasized the importance of job satisfaction, noting, “Throughout their careers, people spend approximately 90,000 hours at work. It’s crucial that some of those hours are fulfilling, where individuals feel they are thriving rather than merely surviving.”
The study, which surveyed around 2,000 individuals nationwide, found that 61% of employees are experiencing difficulties with engagement, motivation, or fulfillment in their positions. In contrast, only 39% report they are “flourishing” at work. These findings closely mirror previous survey results.
Ybarra pointed to increasing workplace demands as a contributing factor, stating, “Workplaces are expecting more from employees. The line between work and home life has blurred, with work often encroaching on personal time, leading to heightened demands on individuals.”
