Felony Charges Filed: TikTok Live-Streaming Incident Leads to Fatal Pedestrian Accident

In a tragic incident in Zion, Illinois, a woman has been charged with felonies after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian while she was live-streaming on TikTok. The unfortunate event took place on Monday, November 3, around 5:45 p.m., at the intersection of 33rd Street and Sheridan Road, according to local police reports.

The victim, identified as 59-year-old Darren Lucas, was on his way home after finishing his shift at a nearby grocery store. As he tried to cross Sheridan Road, he was hit by a vehicle traveling southbound, authorities stated.

Lucas, who lived in Beach Park, was looking forward to returning home after a long day of work. However, this routine walk tragically ended in his death, which has left the local community in shock and mourning.

The incident has sparked discussions about the dangers of distracted driving, particularly related to the use of social media behind the wheel. With the driver now facing serious charges, this case serves as a somber reminder of the potential consequences of such actions.

Police said that following the crash, witnesses stopped and called 911, while the driver of the vehicle involved, 43-year-old Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, remained on the scene.

Lucas was later taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers said following the crash, McCarty-Wroten and an 8-year-old passenger were checked by EMS and declined medical assistance.

According to police, McCarty-Wroten then agreed to go to the Zion Police Department, where she provided a statement and submitted to a blood and urine test, which is standard practice in fatal crashes.

While speaking to police, McCarty-Wroten allegedly told officers that she believed she had a green light when she went through the intersection and did not see Lucas until it was too late.

Officers asked to search her cell phone, but said McCarty-Wroten declined and the investigation continued.

After reviewing the security video captured near the scene, officers were able to determine that the victim had attempted to cross the street while the light for westbound traffic was green. It was also determined that Ms. McCarty-Wroten’s vehicle had allegedly driven south through the intersection while the light for southbound traffic was red.

Officers said the video also showed that McCarty-Wroten did not slow or change her speed before the crash.

In the days that followed the crash, members of the public reached out to Zion Investigators to inform them of a TikTok video that allegedly showed McCarty-Wroten live-streaming herself driving at the time of the incident.

Officers said the video was then preserved and verified through extensive investigation, including the execution of multiple search warrants and analysis of electronic data.

McCarty-Wroten later surrendered her phone through her attorney, and forensic analysis confirmed the video was recorded on the date and time of the crash.

Finally, on Tuesday, McCarty-Wroten was charged with reckless Homicide and aggravated use of an electronic communication device.

After a judge signed the warrant for her arrest, investigators reached out to McCarty-Wroten’s attorney to seek voluntary surrender on the charges, but her attorney told officers that she would surrender in a week.

Within an hour of the warrant being issued, McCarty-Wroten was spotted leaving her home with several packed bags and was taken into custody without incident.

Following her arrest, McCarty-Wroten was taken to the Lake County Jail.

Authorities did not provide a booking photo for McCarty-Wroten.
