WASHINGTON – In a surprising twist at the 2026 World Cup draw, former President Donald Trump was honored with the inaugural FIFA peace prize. This new accolade added a distinctive Trump dimension to the event, which also set the stage for upcoming tournament matchups.

Having actively sought recognition similar to the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump was widely anticipated to clinch this newly established FIFA award. His close relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has previously advocated for Trump’s Nobel candidacy due to his role in the Gaza ceasefire, likely influenced the outcome.

“This is your prize, this is your peace prize,” Infantino declared, highlighting soccer’s potential as a global unifier. This award marks a notable shift from FIFA’s usual emphasis purely on sports.

Upon his arrival at the Kennedy Center, Trump expressed uncertainty about receiving the award, stating, “I don’t need prizes. I just want to save lives,” emphasizing his focus on humanitarian efforts.

The FIFA peace prize aims to recognize “individuals who have undertaken exceptional actions for peace, thereby bringing people together worldwide,” according to the organization’s description.

It comes during a week where Trump’s administration has been under scrutiny for lethal strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and as Trump hardens his rhetoric against immigrants.

The Nobel this year was eventually awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who said shortly after receiving the prize that she was dedicating it in part to Trump for “his decisive support of our cause.”
