WILMINGTON, Del. – In a shocking turn of events, the former husband of Jill Biden, the first lady of the United States, has been charged with the murder of his current wife. Authorities disclosed the information in a press release issued on Tuesday.
William Stevenson, aged 77 and hailing from Wilmington, was married to Jill Biden between 1970 and 1975. Caroline Harrison, a spokesperson for the Delaware Attorney General, confirmed via phone that Stevenson is indeed the former spouse of the first lady.
Stevenson is currently being held in custody after he was unable to secure the $500,000 bail set following his arrest on Monday. He faces charges of first-degree murder in connection with the death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson, who was found dead on December 28.
The police responded to a call reporting a domestic disturbance at the couple’s residence shortly after 11 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered an unresponsive woman in the living room. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a previous news release.
Remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother, Linda Stevenson owned a bookkeeping business and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Her obituary fondly highlights her family ties, though it notably omits any mention of her husband.
Stevenson was charged in a grand jury indictment after a weekslong investigation by detectives in the Delaware Department of Justice.
It was not immediately clear if Stevenson has a lawyer. He founded a popular music venue in Newark called the Stone Balloon in the early 1970s.
Jill Biden married U.S. Sen. Joe Biden in 1977. He served as U.S. president from January 2021 to January 2025.
