AUGUSTA, Ga. ()- The ongoing government shutdown, now the longest in U.S. history, is causing significant disruptions at airports nationwide.
On Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration announced that 40 airports across the nation would experience reductions in flights of up to 10%.
Augusta Regional Airport is among those feeling the effects of these cuts.
“As of today, we’ve had two flights to and from Augusta canceled,” reported Herbert Judon, the airport’s executive director.
Flight information screens at the airport revealed that the number of cancellations has risen for certain routes to Atlanta and Charlotte.
The cancellations are impacting an estimated 150 passengers locally—some customers say they narrowly missed a potential delay flying home.
“I was out of town for a wedding in Peru, and I was hearing about the government shutdown. You get discouraged, because I literally flew back last night and left at 11:30, so I was expecting some sort of surprise this morning. But, so far, so good,” said Arturo Costa.
Others say they’re seeing passengers look for other options just to make it back home.
“20% of our people got re-routed or cancelled. We had some international people, some local folks—some are opting to drive across instead of waiting for another flight, even though it might be a 12 hour drive to get where they’re going,” Dawn Stancarone said.
Judon says the best thing for airline customers to do is to continue checking their flights.
“Whether you have the American or Delta app, or they give you email or text notifications, it’s just imperative with this environment (and everything changing day to day) that you check your flights. You need to make sure that your flight is going, or that you won’t get stranded anywhere—and that’s the entire lay of your flight. The originating, the connection, and your final destination,” said Judon.
Airport staff say it continues to be a waiting game as work to find a solution continues in Washington.
They’re expecting a possibility of more flight delays and cancellations in the coming days.
