FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Florence County deputies arrested a North Carolina man on Wednesday after seizing nearly 7 pounds of fentanyl with a street value of $3 million during a traffic stop.

Alex Gregory Aguilar, 42, of Cameron, North Carolina, was charged with trafficking in fentanyl and booked into the Florence County Detention Center, where he was being Wednesday morning pending a bond hearing.

Aguilar was arrested after deputies stopped a vehicle that was speeding while traveling south on Interstate 95.

“During the course of the enforcement action, the deputy developed reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and a narcotic detection K-9 alerted to the odor or narcotics coming from the vehicle,” Sheriff TJ Joye’s office said in a news release.

A search of the vehicle turned up a cardboard box containing 300,000 doses of fentanyl with an estimated street value of more than $3 million, Joye’s office said.

Trafficking in fentanyl is a felony that carries a mandatory prison sentence of 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
