TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — On Friday, Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, announced legal action against Roblox, accusing the company of misleading parents about the platform’s safety.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Uthmeier criticized Roblox, claiming the company is “hiding behind press releases and superficial safety measures while predators are openly grooming and targeting children on its platform.”
“Our ongoing criminal investigation has led us to file a lawsuit to hold Roblox accountable for misrepresenting the platform’s safety,” Uthmeier stated.
The complaint filed in the Eigth Judicial Circuit of Florida reads that, despite advertising itself as the safest gaming platform in the world, Roblox has become a “new hunting ground for sexual predators.”
The complaint says that the company knowingly facilitated this abuse, in that the platform is designed to attract children, enabling them to interact with strangers, while simultaneously catering to adults to increase revenue.
The attorney general alleges that Roblox has made little or no effort to verify users’ age or obtain parental consent at signup, and that children can easily evade the minor protections implemented by the popular gaming platform.
Uthmeier seeks injunctive relief of more than $50,000 against the gaming company.
