A Florida man, who embarked on a fishing trip to mark his 70th birthday, shared his harrowing experience after his catamaran capsized near Clearwater. The Coast Guard later came to the group’s rescue.

Dennis Woods, along with three family members, including a 90-year-old, set sail in a 25-foot catamaran named “Money Well Wasted” from the Seminole Street Boat Ramp at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday. The vessel was a distinctive green-and-white.

Concern arose when the group failed to return as expected, prompting a relative to alert the Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders shortly after 9 p.m. that night.

By Tuesday morning, the Coast Guard successfully located Woods and his companions, all alive, approximately 26 miles offshore, bringing relief to their anxious family.
