INDIALANTIC, Fla. – A 911 dispatcher is being honored for her actions which may have saved the life of a pregnant woman in Indialantic.

On Wednesday, Ashley Willis received the inaugural “Florida’s Finest” service award from Sen. Ashley Moody.

Moody, R-Florida, created the award to recognize Floridians who take courageous action to make their communities stronger and safer.

“She made that decision to come serve in ways that others may not have. That is the best and brightest and finest in Florida,” Moody said.

Willis is a property and evidence clerk with the Indialantic Police Department and was filling in as a 911 dispatcher when she received a call from someone who hung up.

“I saw a little ping pop up on my map and I just noticed that we don’t get those often,” Willis said. “I’ve been trained to treat each call as if it will be an emergency. I should send someone.”

Willis dispatched police to the location of the hang-up. When officers arrived, they found the caller was a woman who was seven months pregnant and they arrested a man on domestic violence charges.

“When I heard that, I was more proud that my officers got to the scene when they did,” Willis said. “Found her and were able to basically stop the situation and get her to safety.”

Willis said keeping people safe is always the priority, but it’s also important to see recognition for a role that’s often overlooked.

“It speaks a lot and I really am honored,” she said. “I’m just glad to bring that attention to dispatchers, because they truly deserve that attention.”
