Florida Inches Closer to Eliminating Property Taxes by 2037: Key Proposal Gains Momentum

In Tallahassee, Florida, the prospect of reducing or even eliminating property taxes has captured widespread attention. By next year, Floridians may have the opportunity to vote on this critical issue, which has already sparked significant debate throughout the state.

Governor Ron DeSantis is keen on placing a property tax-related measure on the ballot for November 2026. This initiative, which has already surpassed the boundaries of the usual 60-day legislative session, promises to be a hot topic for years to come.

This week, a significant milestone was reached when the House State Affairs Committee approved a proposal to incrementally increase the homestead exemption by $100,000 annually over the next ten years. This plan aims to completely phase out non-school property taxes by the year 2037.

Despite the potential benefits, there is considerable concern among local governments and voters alike. The conversations and debates surrounding this proposal highlight the complexities and potential ramifications of such a significant policy change.

“What is killing us is insurance. This bill is a red herring. It’s acting like it’s for the people, but it’s not for the people,” said Florida voter Pat Dasler.

“This proposal only protects existing wealth, deceives voters, and helps the CFO campaign,” said Amina Spahic, with Florida for All.

CFO Blaise Ingoglia has made it his mission since being sworn in to continue to turn up the pressure on local government spending.

“Taxpayers are sick and tired of their local governments taxing and spending, crying poor, saying they don’t have the money, and then [they] come back to you as an endless ATM asking for more, more, more,” Ingoglia said.

And Republicans, like State Representative Monique Miller (R-Palm Bay), have been echoing those same remarks.

“What I am hearing is the sky is falling; the sky is not falling,” Miller said. “We have a spending problem in local government.”

The House is eager to carry on the conversation throughout session but says progress will depend on the upper chamber.

“What ends up being voted on is still somewhat up in the air. We don’t have a position from our friends across the hall or the executive branch on what details they are proposing,” said House Speaker Danny Perez (R-Miami).

And when asked where the Senate stands on the issue, Former Senate President Don Gaetz (R-Crestview) said they are still studying the consequences with economists.

“The key issue here is making sure that as we reduce property taxes. We don’t create a scenario in which local governments can then raise some other kind of tax or fee,” Gaetz said.

Gaetz, who sits as the vice chair on the Finance and Tax Committee, said he respects the House moving forward with their proposals but will continue studying various scenarios with economists before taking further action.
