NAPLES, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was arrested Tuesday after being accused of hiding an Apple AirTag in his ex-girlfriend’s car and using it to track her location.

According to NBC affiliate WBBH, the woman was first made aware of the AirTag by a friend, which led to her discovering the device hidden inside the rear cargo compartment of her vehicle. She then reported it to the authorities.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the AirTag was registered to the woman’s ex-boyfriend, Kevin Perez, 21, and arrested him for unlawfully tracking the victim without her permission. The arrest report showed that the device pinged 15 times in just one week.

Reporters spoke with Perez who denied the allegations.

“Yeah, that’s not true at all. We’ve been together for seven years, since we were 14 years old. So she has some of my belongings. She could have just said ‘I found his AirTag’ and said it was in her car, which I never planted.”

Regardless, this case highlights how digital devices can be used as instruments of harassment and is one of several similar cases nationwide.

Law enforcement urges anyone who receives an unexpected AirTag notification to take it seriously and contact them immediately.
