FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida man was arrested after deputies said he tried to steal nearly $1,500 in merchandise from a Lowe’s and hopped on the back of a UPS truck to get away.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Michael Daversa, tried to steal the merchandise from a Palm Coast Lowe’s on July 3 but abandoned the items and ran before deputies arrived.

A short time later, deputies said they got a call from someone who saw a man riding on the back of a UPS truck on Palm Coast Parkway.

The UPS driver stopped the truck and told the man to get off near Lupia Court, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives with the sheriff’s office’s Problem Area Crime Enforcement Unit and Real Time Crime Center said they tracked the suspect’s movements and established that the man on the back of the truck was Daversa.

Daversa was arrested and charged with shoplifting. He was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held on a $15,000 bond.

“Thanks to a citizen seeing something and saying something, we were able to get this thief off the streets,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “He tried to get away on a UPS truck, but instead earned himself free same-day delivery to the Green Roof Inn.”
