SEBASTIAN, Fla. (WFLA) — A dramatic scene unfolded in Sebastian, Florida, when a man crashed through a ceiling while trying to evade police after barricading himself inside a home on November 3, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began when deputies were alerted by a license plate reader to a stolen Ford F-350 traveling westbound. This vehicle had been reported stolen from Osceola County back on October 19.
The Real Time Crime Center of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation and identified the suspect as 37-year-old Keith Rodgers.
Authorities pinpointed Rodgers as the driver after he made a purchase of lumber at a Home Depot in Sebastian, still utilizing the stolen truck.
Deputies discovered the truck parked in a driveway, and upon their approach, Rodgers was seen unloading wood from the vehicle. He then dashed into the house to escape law enforcement.
IRCSO said Rodgers barricaded himself in the house and refused to respond to verbal commands.
“Due to his extensive criminal history and previous statements that he would get into a shootout before going back to jail, SWAT and Crisis Negotiators were deployed,” IRCSO said.
After a standoff that lasted several hours, Rodgers fell through the ceiling “into the arms” of SWAT members, IRCSO said.
According to body camera footage of the incident, Rodgers was charged with grand theft auto and resisting an office without violence.
