MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A 27-year-old woman was hospitalized after an alligator briefly pulled her underwater and bit her hand in a Florida river, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

The woman, her boyfriend and her dog took a boat out to the South Fork River on Wednesday.

Martin County deputies said when the woman was in waist-deep water with her dog, the gator bit her hand and wrist and “momentarily pulled her under.”

After the gator let go of the woman, her boyfriend drove her to the boat ramp at Charlie Leighton Park, deputies said.

The woman was flown to a hospital as a precaution. Her boyfriend and dog were not injured.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded to the scene to try to locate the gator.
