In a recent report that might unsettle some beachgoers, Florida has been identified as the state with the highest number of unprovoked shark bites nationwide last year. This revelation comes as no surprise given Florida’s extensive coastline, the longest in the contiguous United States, naturally making it a hotspot for marine life encounters. One county in Florida even holds the dubious distinction of being labeled the “shark bite capital of the world.”

Researchers at the University of Florida have been diligently tracking shark bite incidents both within the United States and internationally. Their findings are compiled into an annual report, with the latest edition for 2025 released just this past Wednesday. The report highlights a positive trend: an 11% reduction in shark bites compared to the previous year, 2024, reinforcing that the likelihood of a shark attack remains exceedingly low.
