In an unusual case unfolding in Manatee County, Florida, authorities have charged 51-year-old Susan Avalon with second-degree murder. This development follows an incident last Wednesday, where two of her former husbands were reportedly shot, leading to a tragic outcome.
Avalon remains in custody without the possibility of bail as the investigation continues. The case took a significant turn when deputies responded to a shooting incident at a local residence. According to Sheriff Rick Wells, a man was shot upon answering his door.
In a crucial moment during their inquiry, deputies asked the victim who might be responsible for the attack. His response pointed them in a clear direction: “Possibly my ex-wife,” he suggested.
Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, marking a somber conclusion to the day’s events. The investigation continues as the community grapples with the shocking incident.
The man later died of his injuries at a local hospital.
The sheriff said the victim’s 15-year-old child was at the home at the time of the shooting. The teen told deputies she heard someone fire three shots, then saw a Honda Odyssey driving off. Authorities believe Avalon posed as a food delivery driver during the shooting.
The teen also told detectives that the suspect was wearing a gray sweatshirt and a surgical mask.
Investigators used surveillance footage and license plate readers to track down Avalon, who they learned had owed about $4,000 to her ex-husband in child support. When officers arrived to question her at her home on Thursday, they saw Avalon exiting her house with bleach and cleaning rags to wipe down her Odyssey.
“We approach her, detectives let her know that they are there to speak about her ex-husband,” Wells said. “She says, ‘Which one?’ We only know one.”
Detectives questioned Avalon’s boyfriend, who claimed that Avalon had recently made derogatory comments about both of her ex-husbands that day. They then contacted law enforcement officers in Tampa, where the other ex-husband lived, to do a wellness check.
“[Tampa police] find that there’s damage to the rear door,” Wells said. “Tampa Bay PD goes into this residence in Tampa. This second ex-husband has also been shot and killed.”
Authorities currently believe Avalon had killed her ex-husband in Tampa first before shooting her ex-husband in Manatee County.
“This is bizarre,” Wells said. “This is not something you would expect.”
Avalon will appear before a judge again on January 2 in Manatee County. Charges are also likely pending in Tampa, officials said.
