ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida begins its month-long Back to School Sales Tax Holiday on Friday.

Unlike previous temporary tax holidays, a new law passed this year established an annual sales tax exemption for the entire month of August, giving parents and caregivers more flexibility and savings when purchasing essential items for the school year.

Clothing, wallets and bags priced at $100 or less will be exempt from sales taxes.

So will school supplies costing $50 or less, learning aids or puzzles that are $30 or less, and personal computers or accessories costing $1,500 or less.

Personal computers and related accessories costing $1,500 or less will also be exempt from sales taxes.

Lake County resident David Gibbons said he was looking forward to the sales tax holiday to purchase school supplies for his daughter, who is beginning first grade.

“I’m kind of just getting a game plan together and waiting for the first of the month to start,” Gibbons said. “By giving the whole month, you can kind of do it little by little throughout the month. I think it’s a really big help.”

Other parents, like Johanna Escrivano, said they had already finished their back-to-school shopping.

“It’s peace of mind to get it out of the way,” Escrivano said. “More time to do other things. One less thing to worry about, and that’s good enough for me.”

According to the National Retail Federation, families will spend an average of $140 per child on basic school supplies.

The study found that when clothes and electronics are factored in, the average back-to-school cost for a student is $890.
