FORT GORDON, Ga. () — Fort Gordon has officially launched the grand kickoff for America’s 250th anniversary. The event featured an evening brimming with live music, delicious food, and a host of family-friendly activities, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display that united both service members and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) community.
As the fireworks painted the night sky, this celebration transcended beyond a typical Independence Day event. It heralded the start of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the nation, offering a platform to bring the local community closer together.
Fort Gordon’s leaders view this commemoration of 250 years of American history not only as a chance to reflect on the country’s journey but also as an occasion to honor the ongoing dedication of those who serve today.
“Here at Fort Gordon, our service members are our global protectors,” remarked Larry Coggins, the Installation’s Community Recreations Officer. “They safeguard not only our immediate community in the CSRA and Augusta but stand guard worldwide.”
Coggins emphasized that welcoming the public onto the installation also provided a unique opportunity for community members to discover the offerings and activities Fort Gordon has available.
“Well, many, many opportunities for the community to come out and be part of, to see what we have to offer here, and the product that we put out is the best in the Army,” he said.
Community partners also joined in the celebration, including USAA, which has a long history of supporting military members and their families.
“Well, it’s amazing. Two hundred fifty years of serving our nation and serving the Department of War, the Army, it means everything because this is what we’re all for, and this is why USAA was specifically instituted,” said Douglas Padgett, a USAA Military Representative.
While the evening honored America’s history, many attendees said it was also an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate.
“Hey, this is the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a place where everyone comes out and celebrates and has a good time,” said Charity Jones, owner of Pedal Pub Augusta.
As the fireworks faded over Fort Gordon, the crowd ended the celebration with one final message:
“Happy Birthday, America!”
