AIKEN, S.C. () – The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday the dismissal of four staff members following a concluded internal probe into allegations of misconduct.
The investigation was initiated by the sheriff’s office after reports surfaced regarding breaches of policy and inappropriate conduct by several employees.
According to the ACSO, the incident in question occurred on April 18, involving an on-duty Uniformed Patrol Sergeant who allegedly partook in sexual activities with an off-duty dispatcher and a deputy during their downtime.
The inquiry further uncovered that three employees, while off duty, visited a local establishment in Aiken County where they consumed alcohol.
The release highlighted that one of the involved employees was under the legal drinking age of 21 and was served alcohol by colleagues. Additionally, an off-duty deputy, having consumed a significant amount of alcohol, operated their personal vehicle while the on-duty sergeant followed them home.
The department said it determined that all individuals involved “violated departmental policies, standards, and the public trust expected of members of this agency.”
Below are the terminated employees:
Ssgt. Kyle Burkett was terminated on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. His employment started on May 17, 2019.
Deputy Ashley Meyer was terminated on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Her employment started on August 28, 2015.
Dispatcher Hannah Lamb was terminated on Friday, May 15, 2026. Her employment started on April 11, 2025.
Dispatcher Taylor Cable was terminated on Friday, May 15, 2026. Her employment started on August 30, 2024.
In addition to the terminations, the Misconduct in Office is expected to be submitted to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) in regards to their certifications.
Sheriff Martin Sawyer released the following statement on the incident:
“The integrity of this office is essential to maintaining the confidence of the community we serve. When employees fail to uphold the law, departmental policies, or the ethical standards required of this profession, decisive action must be taken. We will be transparent and continue working to ensure the highest standards of professionalism and integrity are maintained throughout our organization.”
