SAVANNAH, Ga. — With fuel prices climbing, Savannah’s tourism officials are closely monitoring the potential impact on the upcoming tourism season and summer activities in the city.
Data from AAA indicates that as of Friday, the average cost for a gallon of gas in Chatham County stood at $4.04, while the national average was higher at $4.52.
Joseph Marinelli, President and CEO of Visit Savannah, noted that the majority of visitors to the city hail from regions within a two to four-hour drive, such as Orlando or Charleston.
While acknowledging the possibility that high gas prices might deter some from driving, Marinelli pointed out that the rising costs of air travel could be an even greater deterrent.
“I believe people are exercising caution,” Marinelli commented. “However, with airline prices soaring, many are reconsidering far-flung trips to the West Coast or Europe, opting instead for destinations closer to home.”
He said Visit Savannah is working hand-in-hand with all hospitality leaders in the area, like trolley tours, hotels and restaurant owners, to promote specials and packages to draw people to the area.
“The estimate is about 28,000 local Savannah Chatham County residents support the jobs here in the area,” said Marinelli. “So, when you do have friends and family visiting, get out and support our local businesses because the people that work in those local businesses are our friends, our neighbors, our relatives. We want to keep them strong throughout the summer.”
He said Visit Savannah’s visitor numbers for January through March were strong, and while they continue to monitor high gas prices, they are optimistic about having a busy summer.
