GAINESVILLE, Fla. – D’Andre Vanshon Jemel Anderson, 26, was arrested yesterday and charged with armed robbery and simple assault after allegedly threatening to shoot a Walmart employee who was trying to stop him from shoplifting.
At about 3:00 p.m. yesterday, Anderson was reportedly seen at the Walmart on NW 23rd Street, placing underwear and a knit cap in a shopping bag he was carrying. As the loss prevention officer (LPO) approached him, another customer greeted Anderson, saying, “Hello, D’Andre.” Anderson allegedly walked out of the store without paying for the items, followed by the LPO, but when the LPO attempted to detain him, he allegedly reached into the shopping bag, said, “I got my gun,” and chased her back into the store. He also allegedly swung at the LPO’s head, but she ducked to avoid the blow. He then reportedly fled on foot into the Pine Ridge neighborhood.

An investigation identified the alleged shoplifter as Anderson, and Gainesville Police Department officers arrived at his apartment in time to see him getting out of his car. A search reportedly found the purple shopping bag under the car. Post Miranda, Anderson reportedly admitted that he took the items, swung at the LPO, and told her he had a gun. He said he did those things to try and get her to leave him alone.

Anderson has four felony convictions and served one state prison sentence. He was arrested in January 2022 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly threatening to kill two other people while holding a knife in Walgreens; although the incident was captured on store video, both charges were dropped.
