CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Champaign saw a small decrease in the price of gas over the past week.

The average price of gas in Champaign on Monday morning was $3.11. Online gas price tracker platform GasBuddy collected data from 79 stations in Champaign. There’s a 39 cent difference between the cheapest ($2.93/g) and the most expensive ($3.32/g).

The average gas price in Illinois dropped down 2.5 cents per gallon from last week to $3.21/g.

Nationally, GasBuddy calculated the average price of gas $3.04 Monday morning. That’s down 2.4 cents per gallon from a week ago and 10.3 cents per gallon more than a year ago.

A GasBuddy official said while there was little change in the last week, they warn that President Trump’s tariffs could increase prices.

“Trump’s new trade war has already triggered retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, escalating tensions,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said. “While, on paper, tariffs on Canadian energy could have a significant impact on fuel prices, a prolonged trade war could weaken global economies, reducing demand and partially offsetting the effects of tariffs.”

DeHaan said certain regions in the U.S. could see a greater impact.

“For now, I expect a slow but modest impact on fuel prices, particularly in the Great Lakes, Midwest, Rockies, and Northeast U.S.— all markets that rely heavily on Canadian crude oil or refined product imports from Canada,” DeHaan added.
