SARASOTA, Fla. (WSSN) — A striking new exhibit has taken flight at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota campus, and it’s a must-see for both art lovers and avian enthusiasts alike.

“The Highlife – Contemporary Photography and the Birds” brings together over 70 works by more than 50 photographers from around the world, all capturing the beauty, mystery, and spirit of birds in breathtaking details.

Set against the lush, bird-friendly backdrop of Selby Gardens — which itself is home to more than 160 species of birds — the exhibit couldn’t be more appropriately placed.

“It’s an ideal subject matter for us,” said Selby’s President, Jennifer Rominiecki.

As visitors make their way through the gardens, they follow a path that’s as welcoming to migratory birds as it is to curious humans. The landscape offers a diverse plant life that provides food, shelter, and nesting materials — making it a sanctuary not just for birds, but also for people looking to disconnect and recharge.

“Both of our campuses offer bayfront sanctuaries where visitors can truly escape the everyday and reconnect with the natural world,” Rominiecki added.

As you walk the vibrant grounds, you are struck by the equally breathtaking photos. Advancements in camera technology now allows photographers to capture birds in ways previously unimaginable, enhancing the experience.

“The really unique part is looking at the works of art sited in the landscape,” said Rominiecki. “It’s a really unique way to look at photography and art in the context of nature.”

As visitors transition from the vibrant garden paths into the cool, contemplative spaces of the Richard and Ellen Sandor Museum, they’re met with even more compelling works — offering a quiet space to reflect and appreciate the avian artistry.

Whether you’re a birdwatcher, an art lover, or simply someone in need of a scenic escape, this exhibit offers something truly special. “The Highlife – Contemporary Photography and the Birds” runs through September 14th at the Selby Gardens Downtown Sarasota campus
