GasBuddy Reports: Central Illinois Gas Stations Break $5 Per...

CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — The latest week has seen gasoline prices continue their upward trend, with some stations in Central Illinois now surpassing the $5 mark.

According to GasBuddy’s recent survey released on Monday, which covers gas stations in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and the entire nation, a few stations in Central Illinois have exceeded $5 per gallon. Specifically, two stations in Springfield and one in Decatur have reached this price point, although these are exceptions rather than the rule.

The majority of stations throughout Central Illinois are still pricing fuel at $4.99 per gallon or less.

In the Champaign-Urbana area, the average gas price increased by 9 cents over the past week, reaching $4.90 per gallon as of Monday. Despite this rise, the highest price locally remains capped at $4.99 per gallon, the same peak as observed last week.

The rise in the average is the result of gas stations fluctuating their prices — many that were priced at $4.79 per gallon last week have risen to anywhere from $4.89 to $4.99. A small group of stations, however, are priced around $4.75. These stations are clustered in north Champaign around Prospect Avenue.

Excluding the few stations above $5 per gallon, the range of prices in Central Illinois’ major cities, and how they compare to last week, are listed below:

Danville — $4.69 to $4.89 last week; $4.79 to $4.89 this week
Decatur — $4.69 to $4.99 last week; $4.69 to $4.99 this week
Springfield — $4.69 to $4.99 last week; $4.83 to $4.59 to $4.99 this week

Some of the cheapest gas in the region, however, is still in Central Illinois’ smaller towns and villages. The Casey’s in Lovington is home to $4.49 gas, and the Pillips 66 in Riverton is priced at $4.59.

Across Illinois, the average price of gas is $4.95 per gallon, up three cents from last week, and ranges between $4.19 and $6.35. The nationwide average price of regular fuel is $4.48, up 5 cents from last week, and the average price of diesel fuel is almost identical to last week: $5.62.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said that just a week after seeing the largest price increases in the country, the Great Lakes region was home to some of the sharpest decreases.

“Average gasoline prices declined in just six states over the last week…motorists in states like Michigan and Ohio saw prices fall sharply, while Indiana (-46.5 cents) experienced even steeper relief after the state temporarily waived both its excise and use taxes on gasoline,” De Haan said. “Those declines helped pull the national average lower by roughly eight cents over the last several days after oil prices eased mid-week on optimism that the U.S. and Iran could reach a deal. However, that optimism has since largely unraveled, with talks appearing to stall and President Trump signaling the latest proposal is unacceptable, helping push oil prices higher again in Sunday electronic trade.”

The result of this, De Haan warned, could be another round of price cycling that would send averages higher. In Central Illinois, it could mean more stations breaking the $5 ceiling.
