GATE CITY, Va. (WJHL) — Authorities arrested a Sullivan County resident on several charges this past Sunday following a welfare check conducted by Gate City police at a local apartment.

The Gate City Police Department reported that an officer arrived at the scene in response to a distressing text message that simply read “help,” which had been forwarded to the authorities by a concerned individual.

Upon reaching the apartment, the officer detected signs of a disturbance inside. After interacting with a man at the location, the officer detained him and placed him in the back of a patrol car, according to a police department news release.

The officer then discovered a woman with injuries “consistent with an assault.” Additionally, baggies containing white and brown powder, suspected to be illegal drugs, were found openly on the kitchen table, as noted in the release.

Following these findings, the Gate City Police Department obtained a search warrant. The man, identified as Anthony Carrier from Sullivan County, was subsequently arrested. Carrier now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Possession of Schedule I & II Controlled Substances
  • Malicious Wounding
  • Domestic Assault

He was also charged with a warrant of extradition and was found to be wanted in Tennessee on a felony probation violation charge, according to police.

The police department stated additional charges could be filed based on the results of lab analysis of the suspected narcotics.
