In Evans County, Georgia, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has launched an inquiry into a recent shooting incident. This event unfolded as deputies from the Evans County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) sought to carry out an arrest warrant for a local resident.
The individual in question, identified as 50-year-old David Stokes from Claxton, found himself at the center of the operation on the evening of January 17. Deputies arrived at Stokes’ residence located on Bill Hodges Road at approximately 5:42 p.m. with the intent to execute the warrant.
Upon the deputies’ arrival, Stokes attempted to flee the scene in a truck. However, law enforcement officers quickly intervened, successfully blocking his vehicle to prevent his departure. The situation then transitioned into a tense negotiation phase, as deputies endeavored to handle the situation without further escalation, according to the GBI.
Tragically, during these negotiations, Stokes reportedly pulled out a firearm and inflicted a gunshot wound upon himself while still inside his truck. Officials have confirmed this sequence of events.
Following the incident, Stokes was swiftly transported to a hospital in Savannah, where he is receiving medical attention. His condition is currently listed as critical. The investigation into this distressing case remains active and ongoing, as authorities work to piece together the full details.
