SAVANNAH, Ga. — In a tragic turn of events, multiple officers from the Savannah Police Department discharged their firearms in a shooting incident that resulted in a man’s death on Thursday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The situation unfolded after authorities received two emergency 911 calls around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. The first caller reported a man brandishing a firearm on West Congress Street, while the second call flagged a shoplifting incident involving an armed individual at a convenience store near the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Bay Street.
Officers tracked down 27-year-old Mark Dennis Whibbey from Seabrook, South Carolina, on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. They instructed Whibbey to relinquish his firearm, but he refused to comply and continued his path toward the Riverwalk area, as detailed by a GBI spokesperson.
