GIBSON CITY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley baseball team is gearing up for a new season with only a few returning players from last year’s sectional runner-up squad. Even fewer remain from their impressive 2024 state finals journey, yet these veterans are determined to inspire the younger members of the team.

Senior catcher Trent Wetherell shared his perspective, saying, “Many of them will probably feel nervous, but at the end of the day, it’s just another baseball game. You have to approach it with the same level of intensity.”

Leading the team into his 24th season, Head Coach Dustin White is optimistic about the prospects of his youthful squad. Armed with a challenging schedule and the guidance of experienced upperclassmen, White is confident this approach will lay a strong foundation for the team’s future success.

“We anticipated some growing pains early in the season,” White explained. “There’s a lot of teaching and learning involved, and we have to be patient with mistakes. However, by the end of the year, our goal is for these players to be ready for varsity-level competition. Watching the freshmen absorb knowledge and develop throughout the season is what makes showing up to the ballpark every day worthwhile.”

The Falcons experienced a 12-7 defeat against Prairie Central in their home opener, but they will have another chance to prove themselves on April 6 when they face Heyworth at home.
