CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. () — Georgia Department of Transportation’s (GDOT) Interstate 16 at Interstate 95 improvement projects is moving toward substantial completion with all lanes and bridges in final alignment in 2025.

The projects have been underway for years to enhance safety by reconstructing the interchange and widening I-16 to relieve traffic congestion.

spoke with Kyle Collins of GDOT, and he said the main improvements are expected to be complete in the coming weeks. The widened I-16 stretch includes three lanes in each direction between I-95 and I-16.

“One thing that we have to do to make that happen is finalize bridge construction in certain areas,” Collins said.  “As you approach that 516 interchange, that’s what’s ongoing right now, we’re hoping by the end of this quarter, should be that September, early October timeframe, to have all new lanes and an all-new bridge.”

The agency just concluded a new lane pattern on I-95, which gives drivers more time and space to safely enter or exit the interchange. Once the major projects wrap, crews will be handling minor fixes, like final paving and installing new safety measures. They warn drivers of more traffic headaches leading into early next year.

“They’ll be doing corrective work finalizing ITS, maybe even some lighting in and around the interchange at 16,” Collins said.

He continued, “Folks are seeing the ramp meters go up there, Dean Forest and also Chatham Parkway.  That’s an extra traffic management component of this project.”

GDOT said the projects have taken a bit longer than expected but are seeing positive benefits like smoother commutes. Collins said the traffic isn’t slowing down in this region, so expect to see more projects to ensure safety and also plan for future economic development.
