ATLANTA (WRBL) — Following an extensive eight-month rehabilitation at the Georgia Aquarium, Lorenzo the manatee has made his return to the waters of Florida.

The Georgia Aquarium shared that in June 2025, they took in two manatees, Lorenzo and Alfredo, at their off-site facility. Both were discovered stranded and severely underweight. To aid in their recovery, the aquarium’s veterinary teams devised comprehensive care plans and performed regular health assessments to ensure their progress.

At the time of his arrival, Lorenzo weighed less than 300 pounds. By the time of his release, his weight had more than doubled, reaching over 639 pounds.

Lorenzo has been equipped with a satellite tag, allowing researchers to monitor his movements and collect essential data on his post-rehabilitation journey.

Meanwhile, Alfredo remains at Zoo Tampa, where he continues to undergo rehabilitation, as he has yet to achieve the necessary milestones for release, according to his caretakers.

The Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership says if you spot a sick, injured, or orphaned manatee, or a manatee that is being harassed, report it immediately by calling 1-888-404-FWCC (3922).
