Georgia legislators convene for the start of the 2025 legislative session

ATLANTA (WJBF) – State lawmakers wrapped up the first day of the 2025 legislative session under the gold dome in Atlanta today.

On Monday, lawmakers approved resolutions and took care of business by swearing in new lawmakers in the house and senate chambers. They also released the full 40-day legislative calendar outlining when they will convene and which days will be workdays.

Thursday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is expected to highlight his to priorities at the state-of-the-state address including Hurricane Helene relief, tort reform to end frivolous lawsuits and keeping students safe in schools.

Crossover day will be Thursday, March 6 which is when one bills crosses from one chamber to the other day. The last day of the 40-day budget session will be April 4.

“This is the third consecutive year that we have had 40-day calendar and it’s never been done until three years ago,” said Senate Majority Leader, Steve Gooch. “We are proud to do that to give everyone the days of the future and when we will be in session and when we won’t be in session. There was a resolution to continue the investigation in the senate on DA Fani Willis.”

Lawmakers will hear from state leaders including Governor Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr on Tuesday at the Eggs and Issues breakfast that’s organized by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
