ATLANTA () – State lawmakers have wrapped up day three under the gold dome in Atlanta on Wednesday.

After education, healthcare tops the list for the highest amount of funding in the state budget.

Organizations like Georgia Watch say they want a pathway for community health workers to be eligible for Medicaid reimbursement.

There’s also a push to modify the certificate of need process which will reduce disparity in care and prevent hospitals from closing.

While lawmakers say Medicaid expansion will likely come up, there may be discussions on Georgia Access, a health insurance program, and Georgia Pathways, which is Medicaid for low income Georgians.

“We have done Medicaid expansion with a waiver of the ACA. We have had over 700,000 people that have enrolled in the 100-138% below federal poverty. 100% is about $15,000 for a single person person. We have had 700,000 person enrolled and now we have increased that,” said Senator Ben Watson.

But not all lawmakers feel that is the optimal solution to provide healthcare access.

“We have got to address our growing mental health needs in this state. We also have to find a way to get 500,000 Georgians to receive some version to healthcare. We have to find a way to expand Medicaid in the state. We cannot be the last in the union to ensure working people in healthcare, and small businesses cannot  afford it. They won’t offer it,” said State Senator Derek Mallow.

State lawmakers want to find ways to increase rural healthcare access, which includes expanding broadband internet access to telehealth coverage and prevent rural hospitals from closing.
