Clean, Old Fashioned Hate: What's at stake?

In Savannah, Georgia, anticipation is building as the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech prepare to face off on Friday, November 28th, in the 117th edition of their historic rivalry. Known as “Clean, Old Fashioned Hate,” this fierce competition dates back to 1893 and has been a staple of college football every year since 1925. This Friday’s game will mark their 101st consecutive meeting.

The Bulldogs currently dominate the all-time series with a record of 72-39-5. However, this year’s matchup promises to be particularly exciting, featuring the No. 4-ranked Bulldogs against the No. 23-ranked Yellow Jackets. Beyond the usual state bragging rights, there is heightened interest due to both teams’ strong performances this season.

Georgia is aiming to extend its winning streak against Georgia Tech to eight consecutive games. Their last encounter was a nail-biting affair, culminating in an unprecedented eight-overtime victory for Georgia. Fans on both sides are eagerly awaiting to see how this year’s chapter of the storied rivalry will unfold.

This year’s contest between the No. 4-ranked Bulldogs and No. 23-ranked Yellow Jackets carries some of the most anticipation in years, and more than just bragging rights of beating an in-state rival.

If Georgia wins

Georgia is looking for its eighth straight win over Georgia Tech, after last season’s thrilling eight-overtime victory.

The Bulldogs are all but surely locked into the College Football Playoff, but a win can keep them toward the top of the bracket, positioning them for a first-round bye or a home playoff game in Athens, Georgia.

Georgia does not control its own destiny, however, as it pertains to the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs will need either a Texas A&M loss to Texas or an Alabama loss to Auburn to earn the right to play for a second-straight conference championship.

The outcome against Georgia Tech will not impact Georgia’s chances of making the SEC Championship Game.

If Georgia Tech wins

Georgia Tech is looking for its first win in the series since 2016, when Kirby Smart was in his first season coaching the Bulldogs. After falling just short in 2024, the Yellow Jackets’ head coach and alum, Brent Key, can earn his first win over Georgia.

As for postseason aspirations, Georgia Tech sits on the outside looking in of the College Football Playoff. However, a top-five win over Georgia would boost their chances.

While an at-large selection, even with the win over Georgia, feels unlikely, Georgia Tech can also still make the ACC Championship Game and earn an automatic bid via winning the conference. However, the Yellow Jackets will need to rely on multiple results throughout the conference to go their way, making their chances slim.

The outcome against Georgia will not impact Georgia Tech’s chances of making the ACC Championship Game.

The Governor’s Cup

The winner of the matchup will also receive and hoist the Governor’s Cup.

The game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, although technically a Georgia Tech home game.

Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
