Georgia Southern recaps homecoming win, looks ahead to Arkansas State

STATESBORO, Ga. — Spirits are high among Georgia Southern Eagles fans, as the team celebrated a triumphant win over their in-state rival, Georgia State, during homecoming. This victory helps the Eagles sidestep a potential three-game losing streak.

While the 17-point win might suggest an easy victory for Georgia Southern, the reality was quite different. Heading into the final quarter, the Eagles held a slim four-point lead. However, they rallied impressively in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 points while shutting out their opponents, leading to their third win of the season.

“The key to our success in this game was our offensive efficiency,” stated head coach Clay Helton. “We probably played our most efficient offensive game yet, achieving a 69 percent conversion rate on third downs. In a game with limited opportunities—just eight drives—we managed to score on seven of them. There were pivotal plays that really swung the momentum in our favor.”

Quarterback JC French shone brightly, leading the team in both passing and rushing for the first time this season. He racked up 210 passing yards and three touchdowns, along with 85 rushing yards.

“That performance was essential,” Helton remarked. “We always emphasize that when facing man coverage, running becomes integral to the quarterback’s decision-making. In two-high man coverage, defenders are focused solely on their assigned players, leaving them blind to the quarterback’s actions. It’s crucial for the quarterback to recognize these opportunities and capitalize on them.”

As the eagles turn their attention to Arkansas State, expect to a close game. The Red Wolves score 20 points a game and give up 24 points in conference play.

“Offensively,” linebacker Brandon Tyson said. “they look like a pretty solid team. Quarterback is pretty good. I know Coach Helton talked some about him. Running back looked pretty decent. There O-line I think that our D-line is going to get after them.

Georgia Southern is 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt. Arkansas State is 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Eagles travels to Jonesboro, Ark. for a date with the Red Wolves on Saturday at 7 p.m.
