CHICAGO (WGN) — The race for Chicago’s mayor has intensified with yet another candidate throwing their hat into the ring.
Alexi Giannoulias, currently serving as the Illinois Secretary of State, declared his candidacy for the position of Mayor of Chicago as the election cycle unfolds.
“Chicago’s citizens work tirelessly each day and deserve a city government that matches their dedication,” Giannoulias expressed in a press release. “Perfection isn’t what Chicagoans demand, but they do expect leadership that listens, engages, and shares their deep love for this city. Such leadership tackles challenges head-on and remains committed to problem-solving,” he emphasized.
The entry of Giannoulias into the race marks him as at least the 13th contender, joining a diverse field that includes Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza, attorney and entrepreneur Matt Brewer, Dr. Nisa Lee, George Cardenas, and U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, all vying for the mayoral office.
According to WGN’s Political Editor Tahman Bradley, Giannoulias launched two campaign ads in mid-July and concluded his recent campaign finance reporting period with nearly $20 million. This substantial war chest positions him as a formidable force in the pursuit of becoming Chicago’s next mayor.
Giannoulias’ campaign will focus on making city government more operationally functional while aiming to address the affordability crisis, improving public safety, growing the economy, addressing the city’s fiscal challenges responsibly, and rebuilding trust between residents and City Hall.
