WASHINGTON (The Hill) — Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) circulated a letter Thursday calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to install a statue for Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was shot and killed Wednesday, in the U.S. Capitol. 

“I owe my entire political career to Charlie Kirk. I would quite literally not be in office today if it weren’t for him. Even when my own party was working against me, Charlie endorsed me and campaigned to help me win election,” Luna said Thursday in a post on social platform X. 

“To honor this legacy, we call upon you to direct that a statue of Charlie Kirk be placed in the United States Capitol. This is not a symbolic gesture, but a permanent testament to his life’s work, his courage and his sacrifice. It will stand as a reminder that political disagreement must never be answered with violence, and that the fight for truth must carry on,” Luna said in the letter, which was signed by 15 other GOP lawmakers, to Johnson. 

Others signing the letter were Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.), Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Michael Rulli (R-Ohio), Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), Jefferson Van Drew (R-NJ), Barry Moore (Ala.), Pat Fallon (R-Texas), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Eric Burlison (R-Mo.), Randy Fine (R-Fla.), and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas).

Kirk was killed on Wednesday while speaking at a college event in Orem, Utah. 

Law enforcement has recovered a rifle they believe was used to kill Kirk, the co-founder of the conservative Turning Point USA. 

Authorities are still looking for the suspect. Now, the FBI is offering up to $100,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect. FBI’s Salt Lake City field office has published two photos of the person of interest. 

In the letter, Luna said Kirk’s death is a “wound” to the U.S. and a “stark reminder of the escalating political violence fueled by the divisive and hateful rhetoric from the Left.” 

Luna praised Kirk’s work at Turning Point USA and also for being a “man of deep faith.” 

“He loved Jesus Christ with his whole heart, and it was that love that gave him the courage to stand strong in the face of hostility,” the Florida Republican wrote.
