SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A Chatham grandmother has been making trips from Savannah to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for two years while her four-year-old grandson has been undergoing treatment.
Sonya Jackson, whose name you might recognize, serves as the Chatham County’s Tax Commissioner. Harry, her grandson, has been undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia
“St. Jude is phenomenal; it’s just simply world-class. It’s almost like the minute you arrive on campus, the red carpet comes out,” said Jackson. “That’s the best thing about it. They realize that it’s not just the child that needs the treatment, it’s the whole family.”
Harry’s cancer is in remission after a second bone-marrow transplant. She said she’s grateful for the millions of dollars that have been spent on his treatment at no cost to the family.
“I’d like to just encourage people to keep giving,” Jackson said. “And it doesn’t matter how much you give. You know? Every penny helps. and every penny can go toward helping others.”
She also encouraged people to support the St. Jude Dream Home campaign. Landmark 24 homes is building a $580,000 home at zero cost to the hospital in the Harmony neighborhood of Pooler.
