MT. ZION, Ill. (WCIA) — Mt. Zion was the place of a somber reflection on Tuesday when hundreds came together to mourn for one boy and pray for another as he fights for his life.
10-year-old Jack Brinkoetter was killed in a tragic accident on Sunday. A second boy his age was critically injured in the same accident, and he is currently hospitalized in Springfield.
Both are fifth grade students at Mt. Zion Intermediate School, where a prayer vigil was held Tuesday night. There were tears, candles, music and silence and only one thing on the minds of those who attended: those boys.
“The community outreach from everyone in Mt. Zion and Decatur just speaks volumes,” one speaker said. “I know everyone can hear your prayers and we thank you. Continue to pray for these two special families and everyone who has been affected by this horrible tragedy.”
On this night, a message about remembrance – while grieving and honoring the boys. More than 200 people showed up to express their support and embrace one another during a tough time.
Addressing the accident on Monday, Mt. Zion Intermediate principal Randy Thacker said in part, “We extend our deepest condolences to these families and will do our best to support these families.” He added that the school will continue to provide support and counseling to students and staff. If students need to stay at home to grieve, Thacker encouraged them to do so.
A GoFundMe created to help support the Brinkoetter family can be found here.
