GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Residents gathered in Greeneville on Monday for a remembrance event marking one year since Hurricane Helene.

The Greene County Partnership said 114 homes in the county were damaged during the storm, and the organization has been able to rebuild or restore 65 of them.

Jeff Taylor, president and CEO of Greene County Partnership, said there is still work to be done.

“Not only was there loss of property, but also the emotional side of this as well,” Taylor said. “And so we continue to work together. You know, through tragedy comes opportunity. And the opportunity for us was to come together as a community and do what we do best, and Appalachia, and that’s dig deep and let’s go about it.”

The life of Boone McCreary, who died while rescuing others, was honored at the event.

“He died heroically trying to rescue others,” Taylor said. “And so, again, the ringing of the bell was to signify his unfortunate loss, but also to remind us that his memory will live on forever.”
