GROVETOWN, Ga. () – A home health care worker was arrested for what authorities are saying is regarding Elder Abuse.
According to the Grovetown Police Department, authorities were contacted by relatives of a 65 year-old disabled adult on Tuesday, August 12th, and the relatives explained to investigators that the disabled adult is permanently bedridden, nearly immobile, and cannot provide for himself due to a host of medical conditions requiring around the clock, in-home medical assistance.
According to his relatives, the victim attempted to reposition himself in his medical bed, at which time his lower extremities from the waist-down fell from the side of the bed, leaving just his torso and head remaining on the bed, and the victim’s legs were locked in such a manner that kept him from falling completely to the floor; however, due to the inoperability of his lower extremities, the victim was not able to move himself from this compromised position.
According to investigators, Vernieshia Bell was seated approximately 8 feet away with an unobstructed view of both the victim and the bed, and the victim called for help multiple times over the course of the next 30 minutes before eventually being assisted by another worker who had arrived to relieve Bell.
Authorities state that the entire incident was captured on a camera system that the family has installed in the victim’s room.
Investigators state that during the interview, Bell said that she was aware the victim had fallen partially out of the bed, but stated that she had back trouble and had recently given birth and therefore did not want to risk injury to herself by attempting to lift him back onto the bed, and when questioned as to why she did not call 911 for assistance, Bell stated that she could’ve but gave no reason as to why she did not.
According to the Grovetown Police Department, Bell was arrested and committed to the Columbia County Detention Center for the charge of Exploitation or Intimidation of a Disabled Adult (Neglect).
