WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Harvard University announced Monday its suing the Trump administration after the White House froze more than $2 billion worth of funding for the institution.

The legal fight comes as the Trump administration tries to crackdown on what it says is activism on college campuses.

Other universities have caved to the White House’s demands, but Harvard is now the highest-profile school to push back.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, Harvard says the Trump administration’s efforts to impose changes to the campus are “arbitrary and capricious,” accusing the White House of violating Harvard’s First Amendment rights.

Earlier this month the White House demanded Harvard crackdown on campus activism, accusing the university of allowing antisemitism to flourish.

The administration also called for leadership and curriculum reforms at the university.

When Harvard declined to make changes, the White House froze $2.2 billion of federal money for Harvard.

Several other elite universities, including Columbia, have agreed to similar White House demands in order to protect their federal funding.

Before Harvard’s lawsuit, President Donald Trump also threatened to cut off a university’s tax-exempt status if they don’t comply with White House demands.

“It’s something that these schools really have to be very, very careful with. Very antisemitic when you take a look, whether it’s Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, take a — I don’t’ know what’s going on, but when you see how badly they’ve acted, and in other ways also. So, we’ll be looking at it very strongly,” said Trump.

In response to Harvard’s lawsuit, a White House spokesman said receiving federal funding is a privilege, and Harvard doesn’t meet the requirements to access that privilege.
