Haven of Mercy Provides Holiday Shelter for Many in Need

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Haven of Mercy extends a warm invitation to their annual Christmas dinner, offering a welcoming place for those who may not have anywhere else to celebrate the holiday.

On Christmas Day, the ministry will serve thousands of meals, providing warmth and nourishment to those in need. Located in downtown Johnson City, Haven of Mercy also offers shelter to 75 men and 25 women who are seeking assistance.

Chris Bowers, a former resident who now lives independently, cherishes returning for the Christmas gathering to connect with others. He expressed to News Channel 11 that it feels just like coming home for the holidays.

In related community efforts, 44 Alchemy smoke shop is brightening the season by gifting Christmas presents to over 100 local children.

“It brings back a lot of memories,” Bowers shared. “They’ve helped a lot of people and taught me many things. They supported me in my time of need when I had nowhere else to turn. This makes it a particularly meaningful time of year for me,” he added.

“It makes me feel good because you know, they get it messed up, they come in and we get them squared away on their way again, and then they come back,” he said. “They never seem to forget this is home.”

But the meal, the entertainment, or the many gifts given to children and families in need would not be possible without community donations and volunteers.

Chatterra Bryant learned about the event from news coverage and volunteered for the first time. She says she’ll be back.

“It’s overwhelming,” Bryant said. “It’s the joy just to come out of helping be in the community with other folks.”

In addition to those fed at Haven of Mercy’s location on West Millard Street, many more meals are packed and sent to local jails, shut-ins and others in need.

“I do think it’s so nice that they feed so many people,” Miranda Carmona said. “And all the jails, yes, words can’t describe what they do for this community.”

As the ministry approaches its 50th year, Rockley says he’s planning a big event this spring to celebrate. The ministry is also hoping to open a women’s and children’s shelter soon. To learn more about Have of Mercy or to donate, visit its website.
