'Shocked, stunned, and saddened': Illinois officials react to Health Alliance discontinuing plans

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — State employees who get health insurance from Health Alliance have even less time before they need to switch insurance plans.

Last month, Health Alliance announced they are ending their insurance offerings by the end of 2025. Now, state employees only have a few months before making a choice, officials said in a memo obtained by WCIA.

“When the Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) learned of this exit during the announcement by Health Alliance, CMS collaborated with Health Alliance to determine the best step forward for our members to ensure a smooth transition,” part of the memo to state employees reads. “As a result, the decision was made that CMS will terminate its relationship with Health Alliance effective July 1, 2025.”

All current coverage will stay in place until June 30. State employees will need to choose a new health plan or opt out of State of Illinois coverage during their open enrollment period between May 1 and June 2.

Officials advise all affected employees to register and be knowledgeable on how to navigate the MyBenefits website on CMS’s website before the Open Enrollment period begins. There’s also a list of Frequently Asked Questions on CMS’s website too.

The state will also hold both virtual or in-person Benefit Choice Member Fairs in May, with representative available to answer questions. More details about the fair will be announced in the coming weeks.
