Heartfelt Farewell: Brights Zoo Mourns Loss of Rare Spotless Giraffe Kipekee

LIMESTONE, Tenn. (WJHL) — In the aftermath of the passing of a unique giraffe named Kipekee, Brights Zoo owner David Bright shared his thoughts with News Channel 11. Kipekee, a rare giraffe without spots, had captured international attention upon her birth.

The zoo revealed that Kipekee passed away at the tender age of two last Wednesday. In an effort to understand the circumstances surrounding her untimely death, Bright has arranged for a necropsy.

“We transported her to UT for a necropsy,” Bright explained. “Typically, it takes between three and seven days to receive the findings. We’re anticipating the results by midweek, which should shed light on the precise cause of her death.”

The zoo has been enveloped in support and sympathy from the community during this difficult time.

“For the most part, we’ve gotten a lot of, you know, condolences. The majority of it is positive feedback. I think everybody’s really waiting to see what the results are.”

Bright said that although he and his team are heartbroken about the loss of Kipekee, they’re happy that she helped raise awareness of giraffe conservation around the globe.

“So she definitely brought, you know, shed a lot of light on giraffe conservation. I know that there’s still people today that are going out and putting money into things like Save Giraffes Now in her name, which is, you know, I found that out this morning, which makes us feel a lot better that she can still spread that word even though she’s not physically here.”

“Keep us in your prayers. This was a hard loss for everybody here. You know, we’re all used to seeing her every day. We’re all used to interacting with her. And so it’s been an extremely hard loss.”

Bright said he will provide an update to the public once the results of Kipekee’s necropsy are provided to him.
