Heroic Efforts Fail to Save Man in Volusia Water Tragedy

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A day that began with hopes of a successful fishing trip ended in a sorrowful turn on Sunday, after a fisherman suffered a fatal medical crisis while out on the tranquil waters of Lake Woodruff.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office reported an urgent call to action following a distressing 911 alert early that day. The call set off a rapid response as deputies hurried to the scene.

In an immediate effort to deliver aid, the sheriff’s office dispatched Air One. Meanwhile, a VSO dispatcher remained on the line to guide the caller through CPR procedures, offering a lifeline of instructions in those critical moments.

Upon locating the distressed vessel, Flight Paramedic Matt Brunelle did not hesitate to plunge into the lake, determined to reach the scene as swiftly as possible to provide vital first aid.

Alongside this heroic effort, a good Samaritan emerged onshore, ready to assist. This individual joined forces with other first responders, facilitated by Air One, ensuring they reached the boat to support the ongoing rescue efforts.

Deputies say EMS took over life-saving measures until they got back to shore to travel to the hospital.

Despite extensive efforts, deputies say the 56-year-old was unable to recover.

The Sheriff’s Office says they send condolences to the man’s family, friends, and loved ones.
