NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD) — In a heroic rescue, the Normal Fire Department saved a 13-year-old boy from a blazing mobile home in Northmeadow Village early Sunday morning.
Responding to a distress call at around 1:50 a.m., firefighters rushed to the intersection of Second and B streets. Reports indicated that a fire had broken out with a possible person trapped inside, according to Normal Fire Department spokesman Matt Swaney.
Upon arrival, the crew was met with an intense blaze engulfing the residence. Despite the formidable flames, firefighters launched an aggressive search and rescue operation inside the home. During this effort, they located the young boy in a bedroom.
The child, initially showing no signs of life when removed from the inferno, was attended to by paramedics who managed to revive his pulse and induce sporadic breathing en route to the hospital.
Currently, the teenager remains in critical condition following the incident, with no further updates on his status. Fortunately, no other injuries occurred. Swaney noted that other family members were driven back by the dense smoke and sought help from a neighbor, who then contacted emergency services.
“Our crews faced intense fire conditions when they arrived, but they didn’t hesitate to go inside and search for anyone who might still be trapped,” Normal Fire Chief Mick Humer said. “This incident is a stark reminder of how quickly fire can spread and how critical working smoke alarms are in giving people time to escape. Please, take a moment today to make sure your smoke alarms are installed and tested — it truly can mean the difference between life and death.”
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. The home is considered a total loss.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
