In the early hours of Sunday in Chatham County, Georgia, a high-speed chase resulted in the tragic death of one individual. The incident unfolded when a Georgia State Patrol (GSP) trooper noticed a vehicle racing at 100 mph along Highway 204 and attempted to pull the driver over at around 2 a.m.

Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated, leading the trooper on a pursuit along 204 West. The fleeing vehicle initially exited at King George Boulevard but soon doubled back, reentering Highway 204 and heading eastbound.

In an effort to halt the chase, the trooper employed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver. The first attempt failed, but a subsequent attempt succeeded in causing the suspect’s vehicle to collide with the median wall and flip over.

During the rollover, the driver was ejected from the vehicle. Despite the trooper’s immediate first aid efforts, the driver was unable to recover and was pronounced dead at the scene.

While overturning, the impact ejected the suspect from the vehicle. Despite first aid attempts from the trooper, the driver later succumbed to his injuries on the scene.

The Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT-F) responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation.
