CHICAGO (WGN) — On Thursday evening, the prominent contenders for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat from Illinois engaged in a lively debate. They discussed a variety of issues, including economic policies, foreign relations, the implications of the Jeffrey Epstein case, and the influence of Donald Trump’s presidency.
U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi and Robin Kelly, along with Illinois Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, are competing to succeed Sen. Dick Durbin, who declared last April that he would not pursue a sixth term in office.
The Democratic primary ballot features ten candidates. Those who participated in Thursday’s debate met the criteria set by Nexstar Media Group. The event was led by WGN News political editor Tahman Bradley and anchor Micah Materre.
Voters will head to the polls for the Illinois general primary election on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
The Polls: What they’re saying
A WGN-TV/Emerson College poll in early January showed 31% of likely voters back Krishnamoorthi, compared to 10% support for Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton and 8% support for U.S. Representative Robin Kelly. There may still be time for Stratton or Kelly to mount a dramatic comeback, with 46% of voters saying they’re undecided.
